Summer 2024 Musings
Firing #42 comes to a close the same year I turn 42. An alignment that will not occur again in my lifetime. Kind of neat (and weird) to think about. The firing results are beautiful with more of that fantastic "basalt" glaze on a variety of pots. The big pots are exceptional, with lots of curves and carvings. And, the plates are some of nicest that have come out of this kiln. We are looking forward to sharing these pieces with you this weekend.

It was a shorter production cycle as we dealt with major surgery and recovery for Amanda. She is doing well and we appreciate all the support and prayers from everyone.

With sincere gratitude,

Joseph, Amanda, Owen, & Jacob

Wesley Smith | Summer 2024
It is Wesley's last kiln opening with us. Wesley came to us for a mini apprenticeship during the pandemic and then returned for a full apprenticeship in 2022. We saw him grow as a person and as a potter during two and a half years here. It is hard to have an apprentice "graduate" as they have essentially become a member of our family. He has been like a big brother to our kids (in all the ways that brothers interact!), playing nightly soccer games out in our field, treating us with a concert on the piano or guitar, and just bringing his generally joyful and spirited self to the workshop everyday. He has worked hard and it shows. He has been known to drive 100 miles to go fire a kiln for the night. We hope to take him up on that in the future. Thanks, Wes, for being a part of our family. We are excited to see what you do next.

Austin Harris | Summer 2024
Austin spent quite a few hours in the workshop with us this summer, producing some delightful pieces. He continues to hone his skills and has shown great enthusiasm for learning more about ceramics.
Kristine Fishman | Summer 2024
Kristine is always a joy to have in the workshop. Her attention to detail, honing in on precise designs, carving abstract or realistic motifs, is truly a skill. Her whimsical planters showcase her creativity and we encourage you to pick up a few for your houseplants. We are excited to have Kristine in the workshop again this fall.

Sam Haywood | Summer 2024
Sam joined us briefly this summer from England. We noticed that he was unphased by the heat of the workshop (there's no A/C) but he said he soaked it all up, sun included, since the sun makes rare appearances in England. He jumped right into the energy of the workshop and he has been so fun to have around. We hope that he can come back and stay a little longer. Good luck on your next adventure, Sam!

Owen Sand | Summer 2024
Owen had a prolific summer in the workshop, making probably close to 200 pieces of art, both functional and sculptural works. He is (obviously) very proud of his creations and seems to have an artist's blood running in his veins. He's "worked" in the workshop with his dad since he was a year old. It has been fun to witness his skills, which seemed to grow exponentially this summer. Good job, Owen!
